On display a collection of satirical prints with a Napoleonic subject, a prelude to the exhibition dedicated to the anniversary of Bonaparte’s death scheduled for next April, on the occasion of the last of the great Napoleonic bicentenaries.

No one has managed to arouse in his contemporaries such conflicting and lasting feelings as the empereur, and the various reactions to his undoubted charisma were particularly evident in the last years of his power, when the legend of the general began to lose its charisma and to transform itself into a “black legend”.

The planches on display have been divided, following a mostly chronological order, into four categories: anti-Napoleonic, anti-Bourbon, English and military costumes. Each of them analyses from a precise point of view characters and events that are judged and often ridiculed through a sharp and expressive satire, demonstrating the profound historical and political preparation of the authors, if not also their artistic skills and the skills of printers and publishers.

Each planche is a precious document from which references emerge. to facts, people, literary references, popular expressions that over the course of two centuries had been lost, rediscovering through the eyes of contemporaries the figures and background of an era full of events that changed history.
