Parma will be Italian Capital of Culture for the year 2021

With the “Relaunch” Decree, the city of Parma has been named Italian Capital of Culture also for 2021.

The city’s experience as Capital of Culture officially started on February 16, 2018 with the appointment as Italian Capital of Culture for the year 2020 by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism, which recognised the richness, complexity and depth of a public-private system that believes in culture-based development, expressing a rich and well-structured programme that would involve the entire territory as well as the neighbouring cities of Piacenza and Reggio Emilia.

Then, in March 2020, everything stopped due to the health emergency that hit the whole world. So the city, together with the Region and again with Piacenza and Reggio Emilia, asked the Government to extend the title to the following year, finding support also from the cities that were candidates for the 2021 title, request that was finally accepted by the Government with the “Relaunch” Decree.

The 2020+21 programme, thus, starts again, both with the activites that were already planned and had to be suspended, and with new ones resulting from this period that has seen and is still seeing culture at the forefront of the fight against the current social crisis.

It is significant that the event chosen to officially reopen the activities is the exhibition Hospitale – The future of memory, one of the pillars of the Application Package, celebrating the historical memory and the vocation of the iconic Oltretorrente neighbourhood and now charged with new meanings, offering new food for thought that is more relevant than ever after the events of the past few month.

Parma 2020+21, therefore, becomes even more the proof that, even in adverse situations, it is culture, and us with it, to beat time.
